The Turnhouse Option
19th of December 2005

THIS option was proposed by a number of respondents to the EARL Public Consultation. The Turnhouse option involves the construction of a new station at Turnhouse on the Edinburgh to Fife line, with a link to the airport terminal. As a result, tie Limited has undertaken a Scottish Transport Appraisal Guidelines Stage 1 (STAG 1) appraisal of the option to allow the proper assessment and comparison against the Runway Tunnel option which forms the basis of the Bill.

STAG appraisal involves looking at the viability of the option in terms of Environment, Safety, Economy, Integration, Accessibility, Risk and Uncertainty and Cost to Government.

The analysis confirmed that each of the Turnhouse options was likely to reduce considerably the usage of the rail link, compared with the Runway Tunnel option.
